AkiraNakahara

Ideas break through when creators of culture, movers of capital, and leaders of movements move together.

I design narrative strategies and lead coalitions across these worlds to make that happen.

So bold ideas become impossible to ignore.

How I Get Involved

  • Design the strategy for how creators, funders, and movement leaders work together to expand the reach and power of their work

  • Enable coalitions and networks to move together through shared narrative understanding

  • Translate complex ideas into narratives that expand what people can imagine and create new choices

  • Win new audiences through real-time cultural and audience intelligence that shapes how ideas reach people where they already are

  • Guide where and how narrative investment strengthens a portfolio

Recent Projects

Capitalism Podcast

Co-producer of Scene on Radio: Capitalism (Season 7, 2024), a long-form narrative series exploring capitalism, moving beyond one-sided stories to open up a broader conversation about what's possible within this complex, contested system. Hosted by investigative journalist John Biewen with co-host Ellen McGirt, the series brings together expert voices to trace how capitalism emerged and evolved over centuries, how it has been shaped by those with power, how it shapes everyday life, and how it can be shaped again. Produced by the Kenan Institute for Ethics at Duke University, the series has been downloaded over one million times.

Margins to Mainstream

Co-leading a cross-organizational effort with Beloved Economies and BLIS Collective to bring inclusive economy solutions into public discourse and imagination. The initiative builds shared narrative infrastructure across a network of 300+ organizations, combining collaborative research, coordinated storytelling, and a field-wide campaign. This work pilots a new model for how movements operate collectively at scale, generating shared insight and increasing narrative capacity. Supported by a coalition of 15+ organizations across movement, philanthropy, and business, and funded by a grant from the Center for Cultural Innovation through a participatory process led by Surdna Foundation grantees.

About Me

I'm the son of a Spanish mother and Japanese father, and grew up across countries, cultures, and languages in both the global north and south. That experience has shaped how I work and use storytelling to bridge different realities across complex challenges and contexts.

These are roles I've held that I've deeply learned and continuing learning from:

New World

Founding partner of New World (formerly A-B), a POC-led social change agency co-founded in 2018 to build the stories and strategies that move culture. The agency was founded to support leaders and initiatives historically excluded from power, while building a new generation of creative strategists more reflective of the country itself. As its first Head of Creative, I led work across racial justice, democracy and disinformation, immigration, and economic justice, developing real-time cultural and audience intelligence to guide strategy and storytelling that wins audiences. This work took shape in campaigns like Win Black, a multi-state effort during the 2020 election combating disinformation targeting Black and Latino voters.

Imperative 21

Former CEO of Imperative 21, a global network of 350 organizations working to reshape the role of business and finance to better serve people, communities, and the planet. The network co-created the Imperatives for Economic System Change, aligning diverse actors and increasing the field's coherence. This work translated into efforts such as the RESET campaign, a global initiative advancing a people-centered economy across media, public space, and a broad network of allies. With the Groundwater Institute, Imperative 21 served as a strategic narrative partner to grow the movement within business and institutions toward racial and economic equity, producing a series featuring leaders from Delta Air Lines, Boston Consulting Group, Bridgespan, and the American Medical Association. Imperative 21 also co-produced Scene on Radio: Capitalism (Season 7).
